The June class of HR 2.0 v.2011 was participated by both HR and non HR people from diverse organizations with different levels of responsibility. The core of my presentation is the proactive philosophy of the modern HR given the rapidly changing business landscape. The entry of more Y Gen in the work force plus the social media avalanche that affects many companies should merit serious attention from HR.
The diagram is what I believe is one of the roles of the modern HR to be relevant to the times and help the organization on this time of transition.
Because of the people management component, HR should acquire both the mindset and bite-size expertise of the IT [red color representing a bit of conservatism/reservation towards social computing for security reasons] and Marketing [green color representing the openness to use social media in exploring new channels] because online behavior affects the organization whether inside or outside the company, during or outside company time.
Unless HR succeeds in transitioning herself, she’ll find it hard to shepherd the organization to a proactive and balance attitude towards social media and cloud computing. Passiveness or lack of understanding in the midst of these changes can cause the organization to take either a liberal or conservative stand without fully comprehending the impact of its philosophy. Blocking social media access is the easiest response but will not address all the risks. Taking a liberal stand on the other hand, with out guidelines and proper training can do more harm than good. A balance and proactive approach is a better option. Preparing the organization by ensuring safeguards are in place in terms of policies and guidelines, cyber wellness program and training of all employees will change the mindset of employees. A changed mindset can result to changed online behavior. The policies, on the other hand will provide the basis for discipline should there be infraction.

The social web is becoming the most accessible teaching tool as well as the best place to socialize with ease. I agree that blocking social media in the workplace would be an old-school approach. With the iffy trend of trashing, heckling and confessing every fleeting thoughts online, HR should definitely step up and recommend some steps to protect staff members and organization online. Guidelines regarding the use of social media should be in place without overlooking its potential as a creative and productive outlet.
I am glad I have participated in this learning session hoping I’d be a little tech savvi-er. It also unveiled some tech aids to keep me updated in the vast digital world of the Y- generation. I specially agree with Mr. Sonnie’s remarks on the nonsense cyber dirt of bad-mouthing one’s employer (either former or present) online. What I have retained after the session was Mr. Sonnie’s take on HR being assertive in rolling out guidelines and being in the know rather than just plainly being an expectator in the workplace.
Will definitely watch out for further seminars from WSPH.
